Family Law

Family law covers the emotionally charged issues that happen when families have problems. States have enacted complex processes and procedures to cover the wide variety of issues that need to be decided. This includes—

Since 1974, the D. Bruce Cochran law firm has used its resources and understanding of Texas laws to help families find workable solutions to their very real domestic situations.

Divorce

Texas law is very specific and comprehensive regarding the duties and responsibilities of those involved in a divorce. The Law Office of D. Bruce Cochran has years of experience dealing with all aspects of filing and getting a divorce in Texas, including—

  • Original petitions
  • Temporary orders
  • Child related issues
  • Settlements or trials
  • Collaborative Law
  • Parental relocation
  • Spousal support
  • Liabilities and debt
  • Name changes

With so much at stake, only a skilled attorney with deep knowledge of local law and experience can guide you calmly through the stress of such proceedings to assure your rights and those of the ones you love are protected. (return to top)

Child custody

In Texas, the law presumes that parents should serve as the Joint Managing Conservators (custodians) of their children under a Parenting Plan.

The state of Texas likes to assure that good relations are maintained between both disputing parents and the child. However, these are contentious issues involving visitation, moving, history of possible abuse, etc.

Many times, these circumstances lead to court or the parties agreeing to mediation before contesting them in court. D. Bruce Cochran can handle your child custody issues to their successful conclusion. Contact us today to find the best way forward. (return to top)

Child support

Child support is a very complex and sometimes confusing area of family law. For instance, it is important to note that the duty to pay child support and the right to visit a child are independent concepts. Even if your spouse or former spouse does not allow you to see your children, you cannot refuse to pay child support. And, if your spouse or former spouse is not paying child support, you cannot refuse visitation. You must seek enforcement of a court order.

The bottom line is that while all orders concerning a child in a divorce are subject to future modification, they are binding until modified. Any informal agreements on child support are not binding in the court handling the divorce. These are all serious matters. Orders relating to support and custody of children are enforceable by the court—you could go to jail if you do not comply.

There is only one proven way to protect your interests when it comes to family law matters, especially child support. You need experienced legal representation. Lawyer D. Bruce Cochran has handled such cases since 1974. (return to top)

Adoptions

There is nothing better than a child seeking a new family finding a loving environment with adoptive parents. It is heartbreaking than when an adoption goes wrong. The Law Office of D. Bruce Cochran has helped adoptive parents that ensure their joy does not become a nightmare. (return to top)
